Homeowners think of a roof as the shingles. Roofers think of it as a system, and the part of that system doing the most invisible work is the ventilation of the space beneath it.
Poor attic ventilation shortens shingle life, causes ice dams, grows mould, and raises energy costs. It is also comparatively cheap to correct, and it is routinely inadequate in older houses.
What ventilation is for
An attic needs to stay close to outdoor temperature and humidity, which sounds counterintuitive in a cold climate but follows from how buildings handle moisture and heat.
In winter, a cold attic keeps the roof deck cold. A cold deck means snow on the roof does not melt from underneath, which is what prevents ice dams forming at the eaves.
In summer, ventilation removes accumulated heat that would otherwise build to extreme temperatures, cooking the shingles from below and shortening their life materially.
Year round, ventilation removes moisture. Household activity generates a substantial quantity of water vapour, some of which reaches the attic. Without a route out, it condenses on cold surfaces.
How a balanced system works
Effective ventilation relies on air moving continuously through the space, entering low and leaving high.
Intake comes from soffit vents at the eaves. Exhaust leaves at or near the ridge. Air enters cold at the bottom, travels up the underside of the deck, and exits warmer at the top.
The critical word is balanced. Intake and exhaust need to be roughly matched in capacity.
An attic with plenty of ridge venting and blocked soffits cannot draw air in, so the ridge vent pulls conditioned air from the house instead, which is worse than no ventilation.
The most common fault
Blocked soffit vents are the single most frequent ventilation defect, and the usual cause is insulation.
When attic insulation is topped up, it is easy to push material into the eaves where it blocks the intake path completely. The insulation improvement then causes a ventilation failure, and the two are rarely connected by whoever did the work.
Baffles installed at the eaves hold insulation back and maintain a clear air channel. They are inexpensive and frequently absent.
Other common faults include painted-over soffit vents, vents blocked by debris or nesting, and mixed exhaust types that short-circuit airflow.
Signs of inadequate ventilation
From inside the attic: frost on the underside of the deck in winter, damp or stained sheathing, compressed or wet insulation, a musty smell, and visible mould growth.
From outside: ice dams at the eaves, shingles that have curled or aged prematurely, and in summer an attic that is unbearably hot.
From the living space: high cooling costs, and ceilings that feel warm in summer.
Ventilation and insulation are related but distinct
These get conflated constantly and they do different jobs.
Insulation resists heat transfer between the living space and the attic. It belongs on the attic floor, following the ceiling plane.
Ventilation moves air through the attic above that insulation.
Air sealing is the third element and arguably the most important. Sealing the gaps where warm household air leaks into the attic, around fittings, hatches, and penetrations, addresses the cause rather than managing the effect.

Exhaust must terminate outside
Bathroom and kitchen extract fans that discharge into the attic are a serious and common fault.
They deposit large volumes of moist air directly into the space, where it condenses on the deck and causes damage that goes unnoticed for years.
Ducting must terminate outside the building envelope, and this is worth checking specifically.
When to address it
The natural moment is during a roof replacement, when ridge venting can be installed and the deck is accessible.
But it does not have to wait. Clearing soffits, installing baffles, correcting exhaust terminations, and air sealing are all achievable independently, and they deliver benefit immediately.
If your roof has a history of ice dams, the ventilation is the place to look, not the shingles.
