How to Clean Your RK55 Keyboard Without Damaging the Switches

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR RK55 KEYBOARD WITHOUT DAMAGING THE SWITCHES

Your RK55 is a workhorse—mechanical switches, RGB lighting, and a compact layout that takes a beating. But dust, crumbs, and grime build up fast, and yanking keycaps with pliers or blasting it with a pressure washer is a one-way ticket to broken stems and dead switches. Here’s exactly how to clean it without turning your keyboard into a paperweight.

PREP LIKE A SURGEON

REMOVE KEYCAPS WITH A WIRE PULLER, NOT YOUR FINGERS

Grab the official RK keycap puller or a thin wire-style puller—never use flat plastic ones or your nails. Hook the wire under opposite sides of the keycap, squeeze gently, and lift straight up to avoid bending the switch stem.

TAKE A PHOTO OF THE LAYOUT BEFORE YOU START

Use your phone to snap a top-down shot of the RK55’s key layout, especially the bottom row and function keys. The 1.75U shift and 2.25U spacebar are easy to mix up when reassembling.

WORK ON A LINT-FREE SURFACE

Lay down a microfiber cloth or a clean silicone mat. Coffee tables and carpets shed fibers that stick to the switches and PCB, turning your next keystroke into a scratchy mess.

USE ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL 90% OR HIGHER

Grab a bottle of 90%+ isopropyl alcohol—anything lower leaves water residue that corrodes the PCB. Denatured alcohol works too, but never use rubbing alcohol with added fragrances or oils.

DEEP-CLEAN THE SWITCHES WITHOUT DISASSEMBLING THEM

FLUSH SWITCHES WITH ALCOHOL USING A SYRINGE

Fill a 10ml syringe with 90% isopropyl alcohol, remove the needle, and drip 2-3 drops directly into each switch housing. Let it sit for 30 seconds, then press the key repeatedly to flush out gunk.

TAP THE PCB TO DISLODGE DEBRIS

Hold the keyboard upside down and tap the back of the PCB with your palm. Gravity pulls loose dust and crumbs out of the switch sliders—do this before and after the alcohol flush for maximum effect.

USE A SOFT-BRISTLE TOOTHBRUSH FOR STUBBORN GRIME

Dip a clean soft-bristle toothbrush in alcohol and scrub the switch sliders and housing. Focus on the corners where dust collects—don’t press hard enough to bend the metal contacts.

DRY THE SWITCHES WITH COMPRESSED AIR

Blast each switch with short bursts of compressed air (hold the can upright to avoid liquid spray). Let the keyboard sit for 10 minutes before plugging it in to prevent short circuits.

CLEAN THE KEYCAPS AND CASE WITHOUT SCRATCHING

SOAK KEYCAPS IN WARM WATER AND DISH SOAP

Fill a bowl with warm water and a drop of fragrance-free dish soap. Let the keycaps soak for 15 minutes, then scrub them with the same soft toothbrush. Rinse with distilled water to avoid mineral spots.

USE A PLASTIC SCRAPER FOR STUCK-ON GUNK

For dried soda or snack residue, gently scrape the keycap surface with a plastic spudger or an old credit card. Metal tools scratch the legends and ABS plastic.

DRY KEYCAPS ON A PAPER TOWEL WITH GOOD AIRFLOW

Lay keycaps face-down on a paper towel in front of a fan. Rotate them every 30 minutes to ensure the stems dry completely—wet stems warp and won’t snap back onto the switches.

WIPE THE CASE WITH A MICROFIBER CLOTH AND ALCOHOL

Dampen a microfiber cloth with 90% alcohol and wipe the RK55’s plastic case, focusing on the crevices around the USB-C port and feet. Avoid paper towels—they leave lint.

REASSEMBLE LIKE A PRO

ALIGN THE SPACEBAR FIRST, THEN THE BOTTOM ROW

Snap the 2.25U spacebar onto its stabilizer wires, then work outward to the 1.75U shift and 1U keys. The stabilizers are the easiest to misalign, so double-check before pressing down.

TEST EVERY KEY BEFORE FULLY SEATING THE KEYCAPS

Plug in the keyboard and press each key lightly to confirm the switch registers. If a key feels mushy or doesn’t respond, the keycap isn’t fully seated—adjust and test again.

LUBE THE STABILIZERS IF THEY FEEL GRITTY

If the spacebar or shift key rattles, apply a tiny dab of Tribosys 3203 or Krytox 205g0 to the stabilizer wires and housing. Use a toothpick to avoid over-lubing.

STORE EXTRA KEYCAPS IN A ZIPLOC WITH SILICA PACKETS

Keep unused keycaps in a sealed bag with silica gel packets to prevent dust buildup and moisture damage. Label the bag with the key sizes to save time for future swaps. rk55.
